Performance Evaluation

                        Performance Evaluation:

Yesterday we did our political performance that we have been preparing for the past 6 weeks. I had much fun performing in front of an audience of over 20 and thought it went incredibly well. I feel this way for a variety of reasons.

Firstly, the audience seemed intrigued by what they were seeing. My girlfriend watch me and said she liked it because of how “wacky” it was. I was surprised as to how she understood it was something to do with the corruption of humanity which made me even more optimistic of the outcome. A few people told me that they messed up their lines but she never noticed anything of the sort so from an audience's point of view, it remained smooth. Every  moment that I had the cance to look at the audience they were looking at the performance taking place and nothing else which is a very positive sign.

Secondly, there were many problems we had throughout the rehearsals that involved people sitting in the minor stage that didn’t happen during the performance. Everyone would move and talk whilst sitting in minor stage which would have inevitably distract the audience from the characters on the major stage. As an ensemble we were terrible. All the moments when the actors were supposed to participate only a few would do so. For example, when Vlad uses direct address telling us to block our ears and say “lalala” each time a certain character would speak. When he breaks the 4th and technically the 1st wall we are supposed to exaggerate what he asks of us but only I and a few others did so. Yet again when it came to the real performance everyone committed to the action.

Additionally, I felt that my performance was a lot better then it was during rehearsal. As a producer I was supposed to act very bossy and incontrol but throughout the rehearsals I felt as if Michael had more power over me. However when it came to the moment when I stop the game show to fix the audience to make them look like a ‘pleb’ or ‘boss’. I did it with control and power. I loved both of our deadly sins montage scenes “anger is passion” and “passion is also sexy”. The first one I used gestus to make the audience find it more funny and I was afraid of possibly breaking the table as I had to jump up onto it. The second scene was supposed to include Skittles as a sex pill but I forgot to buy them. So we during the rehearsal we just mimed them. During the actual performance I made a risky decision that I probably shouldn’t have done but I did. I saw on the prop table deodorant so I picked it up and ended up saying “have sexy passion spray” Jack instantly grabbed it from me, opened it sprayed himself whilst the other fought over it. It went perfectly and looked much better than it would have if I mimed throwing Skittles to the floor. During the ‘britain's got benefits’ scene  I performed looking at the actual audience and I noticed most of them smiling at me so that when my character was smiling it was me just smiling back. Even though this part was naturalistic it was followed by me grabbing onto crutches that didn’t even fit me properly which was very noticeable.

Even though I felt like it was an all round positive product there were things that I think could have been improved.

Firstly, if people didn’t mess about during rehearsals and actually pretend as if the audience was there then we would have been more prepared. It wasn’t a polished piece mainly for that reason. This kept making us have to stop rehearsing so that Chris could tell people off which used up precious time. Even though we understood the piece more and had a one or two full run through before the show there were moments where it could have been cleaner. So if I were to do this again I would ask the people talking to be more professional.

Secondly, at the very beginning when Isie brings the audience in they looked very confused and a few of them just walked in and tried to sit anywhere. This made the section very messy but was recovered eventually. This could have been avoided by explaining to the audience what exactly we’re doing. This could easily be done by Isie opening the door and telling everyone “Hi welcome everyone is here to take part in the austerity game show? For our political performance”. By telling them about it before entering the space they would feel more included rather than thinking that they're just supposed to watch a normal play.

Additionally, the majority of the audience looked confused at the end of the play whilst everyone say’s the 270 words that sum up themselves. This was to do with the fact that it comes out from nowhere and it sounded as if the words just mumbled together. People also just left after about 10 seconds. I think if Tom had a placard reading “270 words” sum up me. Then everyone else had a placard saying one thing that sum them up whilst saying their 270 words it would have clarified what we were trying to portray.

I think as a whole a profession execution of the play was successful. We had many brechtian techniques that worked really well. Such as, narration from the durex scene, placards on many occasions but at the end was most effective, breaking the 4th wall throughout the whole play, multi-role in price and indulge, song and dance in ‘britain's got benefits’, montage in the 7 deadly sins and gestus throughout. I think the future potential of the piece as a theatre product could be to take it to a big stage and perform it for a week. There would need to be major changes such as making the transition between each scene more clear.

Media miss representation protest

          Media miss representation protest

Protest plan-
We will be located under the stairs in the main reception area. We will have posters on the window for further information. We will be protesting how the media makes groups such as asians, blacks, females and whites make them seem a certain way. We portrayed this by having an interview/ documentary with anyone who wanted to participate. I was the sound guy, Tatenda was the interviewer, Daniel was the plant, sybil was the costume designer and Kit was the camera woman. Having all of these characters will allow us to say certain things to the interviewee to imply the message. For example, I will say to the interviewee something along the lines of "can you sound more ghetto please? Have a bit of slang in your vocabulary, your black for goodness sake". Sybil will place labels on the interviewee before the interview. The labels will say what ever their group are pecieved to be like so if it was a white person they would have "rich" "employable" "polite". She would then change the labels if they didn't act like their labels and put them into a different group even if they denied. Tatenda will ask many questions that related to their steroetpyical grouping such as, "How does it feel to be an imigrant from syria" or "Do you like being equal to white man?". Kit will stop the interview if the interviewee doesn't cooperate or becomes argumentative. And Daniel will attract people to be interviewed and be the interviewee once so that if the protest doesn't work out as people won't take it seriously we will have at least one person to show anyone watching what we were trying to display.

Preparation-
My role was to be the sound guy so I thought of ideas to seem more like one. I spoke to a technician teacher to ask if I could borrow a boom stick. He said I needed permission from my film studies teacher which I did and she then agreed. I also brought in large earphones and dressed similar to a stereotypical sound guy to make it seem more realistic.

Research-
From researching media miss representation I realised how much society is oblivious to what people are actually like from all the labels and stereotypes the media gives them. For example, I found out that "America teenagers alone spend more than 10 hours a day consuming media, most of it filled with content that objectifies women". This can make them feel like their body isn't like the majority of bodies they see from the vast variety of media. Even social media in fact. We recieved inspiration to use tags from the play Labels as it really helped create imagery of physically being labelled as something; something that stays on you and isn't just said then disapears.

Article about disability benefit cuts

                                                             Political research

Article about disability benefit cuts
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/austerity-cuts-are-causing-mental-distress-and-are-linked-to-rise-in-suicides-health-professionals-a6712651.html

Response-
This is shocking how Mark Wood wasn't given benefits from his disability and his mental illness. His local GP even said he is "not compatible with life" yet Wood only had £40 a week after his disability and housing benefits were cut. His sister said that he struggled to live with that amount. The goverment try to patch things up by funding £1.5 million for research as apart of their "government suicide prevention strategy". Wood not only weighed 5st 8lbs but also suffered from anxiety, obsessive traits and an eating disorder.

Reflect-
This article has now made me extremely passionate about this issue. I am very fortunate to be basing one of the performance scenes on this issue. I think from reading this article we need to emphasis the struggle without benefits for people who need them and how it compares for people who do not have any disabilities. This can be done through dramatic monologues or even placards. If the panel demands the wheel chair user to dance using his feet and then the contestant attempts to do so with a placard saying "I feel abused/ violated" it might make the audience feel more sympathetic towards the issue. The ensemble could laugh behind the audience as contestant falls to the ground trying to dance to further create the effect of sympathy. We could even use Mark Wood as the person who is the wheel chair user instead of his orginal disability but keep in all of the things that are relatable in the article. I will even research for any interviews with his sister to see how is life was and add it into the monologue.

Lesson 1

                                                             Lesson 1

At the beginning of the class Ben asked us what Political theatre includes the group responded by saying the following:
-educational
-has a message
-it is current
-it can be about to opposing sides of an argument for example, labour and conservatives (politics)
-the practitioner Bertolt Brecht influenced and was apart of the political theatre movement.
-the point of it could either be to make people think about the issue being presented or change the  issue completely.
-it can be about capitalism or socialism.

Bertolt Brecht-

Bertolt Brecht looked at our theatre during his time (10 February 1898 – 14 August 1956). He stated that a lot of stanislavsky’s work was wrong. He made it clear that he doesn’t want people to forget their at the theatre as they will enjoy the play rather than think about the messages trying to be implied.

“Mixing one's wines may be a mistake, but old and new wisdom mix admirably.” -Bertolt Brecht

I was trying to find out what made Brecht come to the realisation of disagreeing with stanislavsky and I ended up finding this quote. Even though Brecht thought that theatre should provoke rational self-reflection, he doesn’t disagree with some of stanislavsky’s thoughts. Such as, the starring system being wrong. As each century goes by civilisation gains new knowledge, people learn from one another making society wiser. It is a slow progression but it is happening.

Exercises-

Image result for stereotypes of a villainImage result for stereotypes of supermanOpposites/ stereotypes: We firstly got into pairs and lettered ourselves A or B. We had to be statue of anything Ben said. For instance, Romeo and Juliet, Winter and Summer, hero and villain, and Rich and Poor. I loved this exercise because mostly everyone played the hero with hands around the waist looking up or flexing their muscles whereas the villain was portraying a creepy looking character. All of the pairs were clearly opposites. This juxtaposition within caricature creates an effect that is understood by everyone. This exercise made me realise that all of those stereotypes are known to everyone. It is a universal language that it most definitely used in political theatre. So that people from different countries, ages, races and religions can understand, think and reflect.

Image result for society controlling teenagersshrugging: This was a very short exercise almost like a warm up of the minds as it made me think more about every exercise we were doing and the purposes for them. We first started off by shrugging normally whilst saying “I dunno”. Then we slowly exaggerated the gesture by raising our shoulders to our necks and our arms the height of our shoulders then relaxing the arms and letting them connect into your legs. He kept saying say it like a teenager would and I was trying to see the point of this exercise. I assumed that it was about using the technique gestus but then Ben said now sound like a zombie. Then it slightly became clear to me and others what the purpose was. Ben then clarified this  making someone control someone else’s shrug then the person controlling said “I’m society!” I then understood. It’s a reflection on teenagers of today’s being controlled by society. They don’t know or want to know anything as all they do is follow and consume social media of society  making them like zombies. This further aided my understanding of political theatre.

evaluation of protest

       Evaluation of Protest

Overall I felt like the performance was successful for a variety of reasons. A number of people came to our section and looked at the different posters we had taped to the window. This made me feel as if people were actually interested in our protest. A lot of people took ours seriously and didn't laugh or try to create havoic so it all went to plan. However a few things didn't go smoothly. It was very crowded in the main reception area due to the variety of people doing protests in the same location but also the fact that it is right next to the canteen where many people go to. This made it very hard to communicate verbally to the interviewee so he/ she may have missunderstood our protest. People's attention span was wide as there was a variety of protest's going on. A few of the people who were interviewed, especially one, seemed to be offended by the questions which were asked. This was most likely to do with the fact that he didn't understand that what we were saying wasn't what we agreed with. So if I were to do it again I would have mentioned it before starting the interview or told him to look at the posters making him understand before hand what exactly our protest is about. On the contrary by doing the protest without him knowing exactly if we're acting or not could have made him relate to the people that gothrough situation's like that.

Tax on tampons

The protest that I found the most engaging and interesting was the "tax on tampons" as they found many ways of making the audience appealed. First of all they were selling two types of cup cakes one normal and the other with tampons in. The cost of the tampon version was more expensive. This made me think about how something that prevents pain costs more as it is apparently a luxury but something that taste nice isn't. I didn't understand why and double checked by going online to see if it were true. It was! It made me question which is exactly what the aim of the protests was for. Secondly, they were located in the canteen. People eat in that environment so it could put people of their food creating a bigger effect. The canteen was also a space where only two protests were going on so people could actually listen and focus. Thirdly, their message was very clear having sa they used many items to convey. For instance, the cup cake sale, a lot of blood shown through the trousers and a banner saying "CANNOT luxures" with blood splattered across.

I think they could have improved by making the cake sale more of a reality by reducing the prices of both types of cup cakes so people would actually buy some. Then it would be clear how expensive tampons cost as nobody would buy one. They could have also made the cake sale stand out more so that people would be attracted. They could have also had other types of products that aren't classified as luxury to shock the viewers. I was shocked to learn that razors are VAT free. Other than that their protest was incredible.
